Creamy burrata, salty feta, crumbly Wensleydale and smoky cheddar: these are just some of the cheeses being seen on the plates of aficionados in India. As an increasing number of foodies surrender to the joys of cheese and more cheese, the varieties on display at stores such as Godrej Nature’s Basket are also on the rise. But there is a lot more to cheese than we think. Kurush Pavri, Manager - Category Management (Dairy category), Godrej Nature’s Basket, shares some interesting facts about cheese.

  1. They say cheese, wine and friends must be old to be good. But how old is cheese? It is believed that people started making cheese 1700 years ago, well before they learned how to write!

  2. Have you ever tasted cheese and found it to be hard and nutty? That’s how mature cheese tastes. The easiest way to guess the flavor and age of cheese is to analyse its texture. Soft cheese is fresh and creamy whereas hard cheese is usually mature and nutty and pungent in taste.

  3. How lovely would it be to make cheese at home? But do you know, you’d need 10 pounds of milk to make one pound of cheese! That’s a lot of milk we say!

  4. There’s nothing a little bit of cheese can’t fix. Yes, it’s true. Cheese contains tyrosine, an amino acid, which can trigger dopamine, the mood-boosting neurotransmitter. So the next time you feel a little low, snack on some cheese.

  5. Cheese is said to have many health benefits. Apart from boosting your mood, it can induce sleep and improve sleep patterns. It is also known to prevent tooth decay if eaten immediately after meals.

  6. Did you know there’s a ‘definite formula’ to make cheddar cheese? Joseph Harding (who invented modern cheese-making techniques) worked out this ‘definite formula’. That’s why he’s also called the ‘father of cheddar cheese.'

  7. Have you ever dreamt of living in a house made of cheese? Yes? Then you are definitely a turophile. What’s that? Well, we are just saying that you are a true cheese lover!
